Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)
HIPEC, or Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, is an advanced treatment method used particularly for cancers that have spread within the abdominal cavity. During surgery, a heated chemotherapy solution is circulated directly into the abdomen to target and destroy microscopic cancer cells that are not visible to the naked eye.
HIPEC is most commonly applied in peritoneal cancers originating from the stomach, colon, ovaries, or appendix. Since the chemotherapy comes into direct contact with the tumor, it can be more effective than traditional systemic chemotherapy.
In carefully selected patients, HIPEC has the potential to extend survival and improve quality of life.
