Obesity is known as one of the biggest enemies of people in our age. This disease, which disturbs Western societies deeply, unfortunately, is increasing in our country due to unhealthy eating habits. However, the only cause of obesity is not unhealthy diet and less exercise. Obesity has a bigger cause than these. This reason is mental problems. Especially depression, anxiety, agoraphobia and similar problems make people closer to obesity. Let’s examine the relationship between these diseases and obesity.
One of the most common questions people ask is: “Does depression cause obesity?” The answer is both yes and no. Because the effects of depression vary from person to person. For many people, the biggest symptom of depression is that they can no longer enjoy the work that used to be done and which gave pleasure. If you can no longer do the things you used to do with great pleasure and avoid other responsibilities in your daily life, you may be depressed.
Another symptom of depression is “change in appetite”. So some people start eating junk food squeezed on the couch when they get depressed. Some people do not open their mouths and cannot eat a single bite. If depression has made you overeat, there may be some problems behind it. Particular attention should be paid to what the depression is caused by. For example, if a breakup or death made you depressed, then you would be more inclined to eat. This situation triggers obesity.
The two most common problems of our society are together! Both anxiety and obesity have become widespread in our society over the past 20 years. Anxiety, also known as anxiety disorder, is the problem of people feeling excessively anxious in daily life. This psychological illness causes daily life to not be done properly. The flow of your life begins to take shape according to anxiety and your quality of life decreases.
The main cause of anxiety is a past trauma. This trauma can be very diverse and generally originates in childhood. For example; Domestic violence, abuse, rape, abuse, and other problems can cause anxiety. If you too feel like you will be exposed to violence at any time in life, this may be a symptom of anxiety.
Anxiety is one of the problems that cause obesity. Because anxiety is also a disease that can push people to eat. This is very risky, especially if eating is chosen as a way of escape from traumas. In the documentary called Heavy Lives on the TLC channel, it is often seen that obesity progresses due to traumas. In other words, people can get eating disorders as a result of the trauma they experience.
Agoraphobia, also known as fear of open spaces, is a disease that causes people to feel uncomfortable in open spaces. The person always wants to keep at home and believes the world outside is dangerous. This belief, which is at the level of obsession, prevents the daily life of the person and disrupts their work. At the same time, people who cannot leave the house may feel strangers even in other rooms in the house. For this reason, they keep themselves in the area they perceive as a safe area whenever possible.
Agoraphobia, which triggers obesity, is a problem that prevents a person from exercising. A person who does not move much even at home cannot burn the calories he takes due to inactivity. In this case, obesity may occur.
If you have psychological problems, your only remedy is to see a specialist. These problems are very difficult to fix on your own. You can get psychotherapy help with the help of a psychological counselor or psychologist. If your problem is much more serious, you can start medication with the help of a psychiatrist. Making an appointment with the psychology service of the nearest hospital will be the “first step” for you.
